Member of Ondo State House of Assembly, Hon. Ifabiyi Olatunji have lauded the Supreme Court judgment that affirmed the victory of Dr Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa and his deputy, Dr Olayide Adelami as the winners at the apex court in Abuja following a suit filed by PDP's candidate in November 16 governorship election in the state, Alfred Agboola Ajayi
Ifabiyi, in a statement on Wednesday by his spokesperson, said that the judgment has laid to rest all misguided rumours and innuendos by the opposition party, particularly the PDP and its candidate, Ajayi, disputing the credibility of the APC's candidate and his deputy.
Recall that, the apex had on Tuesday unanimously upheld the decisions of both the tribunal and the Court of Appeal, which had earlier ruled that Agboola Ajayi and his party, the People's Democratic Party (PDP), failed to prove their case against the victory of APC and its candidate at the November 2024 guber election Ondo State.
Agboola Ajayi, and PDP, had in the suit sought nullification of the election of the Deputy Governor, Dr Olayide Adelami over allegations of discrepancies in his name change, and as well challenged the legitimacy of Governor Aiyedatiwa and the APC.
The PDP's standard bearer, in the case, claimed that Adelami, who previously had “Jackson” as his middle name while in secondary school, had changed it to “Owolabi” without proper documentation.
The apex court through its justice,Musa Dattijo Muhammad in his ruling said that the defendants lacked the legal standing to pursue the case which rendered the appeal unsustainable, dismissed the matter and ordered Ajayi to pay ₦2 million in costs to each of the four respondents.
Ifabiyi, who described the suit that was heard at the high court, appeal court, and finally at the Supreme Court as “an attempt by Hon. Agboola Ajayi and the PDP to pull down the mandate given to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa by people of Ondo State in November 16, 2024 through the back door”.
Justice Musa Dattijo Muhammad, on behalf of other Supreme Court justices, said the Agboola Ajayi and his PDP's case expressly stood dismissed.
The lawmaker noted that with the petition dismissed by the court, it would allow the executive arm of government in the state to concentrate on implementing the blueprints it's has promised during thae last 2024 APC's electioneering campaign.
According to the lawmaker, "I congratulate the governor and his deputy for this victory.
I congratulate the people of Ondo State because this means they will continue to enjoy the lofty blueprints of the governor as contained in the ‘OUR EASE’ agenda
The protracted legal battle could have been distraction to the governor and the state government, but for Dr Aiyedatiwa’s focus and commitment to ensuring the state and its subjects express new dawn .
With the judgment, what has come into play is the triumph of truth over falsehood and victory for democracy and rule of law,” Ifabiyi posited.
The lawmaker, however, called on residents of the State to rally round the Governor to ensure that he delivers more dividends of democracy and move the state on the path of sustainable progress.
