Trust is generally regarded as the cornerstone of business. It's the basis of every human relationship, every interaction, every communication, every initiative, every work project and even any strategic imperative you need to accomplish.
In politics, trust is key. It is the bedrock of any achievement by a politician. And without trust, you can't function properly.
This is the case with Lucky Aiyedatiwa, Ondo state governor and his litany of unfulfilled promises. During his desperate bid to pull the rug from under the feet of his late boss, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, Aiyedatiwa went out in search of likeminds (collaborators). To each, he made promises which he has failed to keep.
Chief Olugbenga Ale:
Chief Olugbenga Ale was the chief of staff to Akeredolu, a fellow Owo-born. To give himself some level of credibility, Aiyedatiwa promised to make Ale his deputy if he supports him to become the governor. Without blinking, the lanky Ale, a very rich retired permanent secretary, quickly agreed to the deal and threw his light weight behind the governor.
On the eve of the announcement of the deputy governor by Governor Aiyedatiwa, Ale had prepared himself and even came up with a very beautiful acceptance speech. He was even said to have prepared his four wives to stand by his side at the ceremony. But he got the shcok of his life when the governor announced another Owo-born politician, Adelami, as his deputy.
Heart-broken, Ale recoiled into his shells with his tails between his legs. Noticing the change in his demeanour, Aiyedatiwa was said to have another watering overture to him - a federal appointment. As gathered, Olugbenga Ale is still waiting for the federal appointment.
Engr Rasak Obe
Remember him? The Ilara-Mokin-born who was behind the forged signature allegation when late Akeredolu was battling for his life. To give Aiyedatiwa his support, Obe requested for the deputy governor slot. Aiyedatiwa quickly responded with a big YES.
The youngman went to work with his own part of the script. With the script grinding to the end, Aiyedatiwa changed tune and told Obe that the deputy governor slot would no longer be possible. Obe then made another request, the juicy works ministry commissioner. The governor gave him words, and at that point, it seemed a sealed deal.
Convinced that he had the works ministry in his pockets, Obe went to town to shout the 'good news' to his friends. There was a loud party in Akure, and shortly before the announcement, he went to the ministry with team his prayer warriors to sanctify the office.
Obe was offered the ministry of energy and mineral resources instead of his much-coveted ministry of works. Like Ale, it was a rude shock for Obe when he failed to get what the governor had promised him. Reports have it that he is still licking his wounds, silently though.
Pastor Emmanuel Igbasan
Igbasan was Akeredolu's commissioner economic planning and budget. He is, no doubt a briliant chap and he was well-loved by Akeredolu. But like any other human, the lure of a seeming bigger office was too much to resist.
To queue behind Aiyedatiwa, Igbasan wanted something in return - he would be moved to the ministry of finance. Without thinking twice, Aiyedatiwa granted the request and offered the pastor the finance ministry if he becomes the governor.
But like other broken promises, Aiyedatiwa preffered Mrs. Omowumi Isaac, who had previously been sacked by Akeredolu as the Director-General of the bureau of public procurement.
Igbasan was, however, retained as commissioner for economic planning and budget, his old office.
Akin Sowore
Akinwumi Sowore did not all together lose out. He got the ministry of lands and housing. But in times past, the ministry was known as ministry of lands, housing and infrastructure. But clever Aiyedatiwa did a surgery on the ministry and carved out the infrastructure department, now under the control of a special adviser.
Prince Kayode Aroloye
Idanre-born prince was chairman of Idanre local government area. Aiyedatiwa dangled before him the position of the deputy governor if he supports his ambition to succeed Akeredolu.
Expectedly, the prince bit the bait and waited to be announced as the deputy governor.
But with the announcement of Adelami as deputy governor, Aiyedatiwa threw another bait at the Prince, this time a juicy commissioner slot. But again, that one turned out another hope dashed.
The Prince, it is gathered, is waiting for the next batch of commissioners after the governor, yet again assured him that he is working on a new list.
However, sources within the governor's inner circle have claimed that Prince Aroloye may as well be another victim in Governor Aiyedatiwa's several promise and fail actions.
Wale Akinlosotu
The former Commissioner for culture and tourism was already dreaming about his role as deputy governor.
Having been assured of the office by Lucky Aiyedatiwa, Wale quickly switched allegiance to the then deputy governor. He even told some friends and associates about it if Lucky becomes governor.
Not a few of his friends went to town with the joyful news. They too began seeing themselves as friends of the deputy governor.
But three months after Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa has been sworn in as governor, and even after he had named another man as his deputy, Wale Akinlosotu is still waiting in the wings with fast fading hopes.
